Matt O’Riley has said YES to join Juventus

Matt O’Riley is emerging as a strong target for Juventus’ midfield. The Danish midfielder has been on the club’s radar for years. Although interest dates back a couple of seasons, it has recently gained momentum.

Last summer’s talks never advanced beyond initial interest. Back then, Napoli’s director Giuntoli preferred Koopmeiners to satisfy Motta’s needs. Now, the situation looks very different.

Juventus seems ready to make a serious move for the 2000-born talent. Early negotiations have been positive, and O’Riley has shown full willingness to join the Italian giants reports Nico Schira.

The club is prepared to offer a five-year contract worth around €3 million per year. This tentative agreement marks a significant step forward.

However, Juventus must first balance its books. Selling at least two players among Douglas Luiz, Weston McKennie, or Fabio Miretti is essential.

Proceeds from their departures would help fund the deal with Brighton. The English club demands a hefty €30 million for their former Celtic star, with no discounts expected.

O’Riley’s physical stature and technical skills make him an asset. Standing over 1.90 meters tall, he combines size with solid ball control. These traits allow him to thrive both defensively and offensively, a rare balance for midfielders today.

A midfielder with potential and market intrigue

O’Riley shone brightest as a mezzala during his time in the Scottish Premiership. There, he showcased impressive goal-scoring ability, rivaling forwards. His breakout performances attracted wide European interest about a year ago.

Brighton eventually secured him for €27 million after a fierce battle with Atalanta. Yet, O’Riley struggled to find consistency in the English Premier League. Unlike Glasgow, where he was a regular starter, his time at Brighton involved several bench spells.

Interestingly, Juventus’ current sporting director, Comolli, tried to sign him for Toulouse in summer 2023. However, Celtic’s high asking price stopped the transfer, leading Toulouse to seek cheaper options.

Juventus is not alone in pursuing O’Riley. Roma’s coach may reignite interest if Lorenzo Pellegrini or Nicolò Pisilli depart. Napoli also considered him early last summer before shifting focus elsewhere. This suggests Italy and Serie A remain key in O’Riley’s career path.

Brighton prefers to sell O’Riley abroad rather than to a direct rival. Among English clubs, Everton, Sunderland, and Nottingham Forest have shown interest.

Sunderland, in particular, could become Juventus’ ally if they finalize a deal for Douglas Luiz soon. Selling Luiz would provide Juventus with vital funds to secure O’Riley’s signature.

In football, timing and market moves are everything. Juventus appears ready to crack open the transfer window, with O’Riley poised to become their next midfield cornerstone.
