Gentleman’s agreement in place for Tonali’s departure

Sandro Tonali, currently representing Italy in the World Cup playoffs, has become one of the most talked-about players ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The 2000-born midfielder, who left Milan in 2023 to join Newcastle United, is now reportedly considering a summer exit under specific conditions.

Several top clubs from both the Premier League and Serie A are closely monitoring the situation, as interest in the young playmaker continues to grow.

According to The Shields Gazette, Tonali’s representatives believe there is a “gentlemen’s agreement” with Newcastle regarding a potential transfer.

The understanding seems straightforward: if the Magpies fail to qualify for any European competition next season, they will entertain offers and consider selling the midfielder—despite having been considered untouchable until now. Current league standings make this scenario increasingly plausible.

Newcastle’s European Hopes and Tonali’s Future

Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle currently sit 12th in the Premier League with 42 points, making a Champions League qualification extremely unlikely. Aston Villa, in fourth, already hold 54 points, while Liverpool in fifth have 49 points.

Even the race for the Europa League appears complicated, with Chelsea sixth at 48 points and Brentford and Everton tied on 46 points, fighting for the remaining spots.

According to The Shields Gazette, however, a qualification for the Conference League may not be enough to convince Tonali to stay. This could make Newcastle more willing to negotiate, though any move would still come at a premium.

Tonali’s contract, renewed last year until 2029 with an option for an additional season, ensures that Newcastle can demand a high transfer fee—reportedly at least €80 million.

The midfielder’s wages also add to the financial weight, with an annual salary of €7 million plus €2 million in potential bonuses. All these factors are being closely watched by clubs already interested in securing the Italian international.

In Italy, Juventus has long been linked with Tonali, although economic constraints have made a return to Milan complicated, despite the hopes of many Rossoneri fans.

In England, interest appears more concrete: Manchester United is in need of a midfield revamp, especially after Casemiro’s expected departure at the end of the season, and the Red Devils reportedly value the young Italian highly.

Arsenal also remain in the conversation, with a desire to strengthen a midfield already anchored by Rice and Zubimendi.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Tonali’s next move could become one of the most significant midfield decisions in European football, potentially reshaping both Premier League and Serie A landscapes.
