Last summer, one of the most coveted free agents in world football was Kevin De Bruyne. After a trophy-laden career with Manchester City, he faced a defining choice: prioritize elite competition or financial gain.
Opting for the former, he joined Napoli—a decision that, given his advancing age (he turns 35 on June 28), may still raise questions. A similar crossroads now faces Bernardo Silva, though under different circumstances.

The Portuguese playmaker, who will turn 32 on August 10, remains at the peak of his competitive powers. With his departure from Manchester City expected this summer, Silva has taken the month of April to carefully evaluate his next move.
According to Tuttosport, Juventus have already made exploratory contact through agent Jorge Mendes.
While no formal offer has been made, the Italian giants are gathering key information before deciding whether to proceed—particularly as their financial strategy hinges on qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Between Ambition and Opportunity
Silva’s decision reflects a familiar dilemma: continue competing at the highest European level or pursue lucrative opportunities in leagues such as MLS or the Saudi Pro League.
While this may seem like a simplistic “football vs money” equation, the reality is more nuanced. The midfielder has not ruled out Juventus—in fact, he has shown openness to negotiations.
However, any deal would need to align closely with his current earnings. At present, Silva earns around €10 million net per season in Manchester and is unlikely to consider offers below €8–9 million annually.

Juventus are aware that signing a player of his caliber would require exceeding their current wage structure.
Rising star Kenan Yildiz is set to earn €7 million from July, a benchmark the club has tried to maintain—even for players like Dušan Vlahović. Silva, however, could represent a rare exception.
Tactical Fit and Strategic Timing
For now, patience defines both sides. Juventus must first finalize contract renewals for key figures such as Luciano Spalletti, Dušan Vlahović, and Manuel Locatelli before shaping their squad for next season.
Much will also depend on their push for a top-four finish, especially with strong competition from Como, led by Cesc Fàbregas. From a technical standpoint, Silva’s arrival would significantly elevate Juventus’ quality and experience.
Yet, his role within the system remains a key consideration. In a 4-2-3-1 setup, he could seamlessly fit into Luciano Spalletti’s vision. However, a tactical shift toward a more physically dominant midfield could alter those plans entirely.

Despite being a free agent, this would still be a high-cost operation, factoring in wages and commissions for a player over 30.
Juventus have learned from the complex De Bruyne–Napoli situation: such signings require full alignment across all levels of the club.
If enthusiasm from the coaching staff is not absolute, the deal will not proceed. For now, Bernardo Silva remains a compelling option—but one that demands careful consideration before any final move is made.
