João Mário has officially joined Juventus, arriving from FC Porto during this summer’s transfer window.

With such a strong résumé, his addition to Juventus adds proven creativity and versatility to the right flank.

Creative force from the back

João Mário’s influence goes beyond traditional defending. Since the 2019/20 season, only veteran Pepe made more league appearances for Porto among defenders.

João clocked 116 appearances, highlighting his importance and reliability. He also topped the assist charts for Porto defenders with 13, outperforming even Alex Telles.

His creativity is unmatched in the backline. João created 115 chances from open play in the Primeira Liga—at least 45 more than any other Porto defender.

Of these, 32 were clear-cut chances, over double what his teammates managed. His 210 passes into the penalty area speak to his forward-thinking playstyle and ability to unlock defenses from deep.

João Mário : Driving attacks and breaking lines

João Mário’s attacking mindset stood out again in the 2024/25 season. He led Porto in open-play crosses, attempting 78 and completing 24.

His dribbling stats are equally impressive—he attempted 70 and completed 30, both team-highs for defenders. His progressive runs created 16 chances following ball carries over five metres, more than any Porto player, regardless of position.

With such statistics, João Mário offers more than defensive cover—he’s a dynamic outlet, combining technical skill with tactical intelligence.

Juventus gains a full-back who can influence the game at both ends of the pitch. Fans have every reason to be excited about what he brings to the squad.
