O’Riley emerges as a promising option

Juventus is actively seeking to strengthen its midfield ahead of the new season. The club’s dream signing remains Morten Hjulmand, a highly talented Danish midfielder.

However, Hjulmand’s €60 million release clause makes this move very challenging. Sporting Lisbon, his current club, shows no willingness to negotiate on the hefty fee, putting Juventus in a difficult spot.

Alongside Hjulmand, Juventus is also interested in Sandro Tonali, but his acquisition also faces hurdles.

Meanwhile, the club prepares to say goodbye to some players. Timothy Weah is set to join Marseille, while Douglas Luiz is also likely to leave. Luiz is no longer part of coach Igor Tudor’s plans, which makes space for new midfield options.

Why Matt O’Riley could be Juventus’ best midfield bet

Given the high costs of other targets, Matt O’Riley from Brighton is gaining traction as a more affordable and realistic option. The English midfielder, born in 2000, nearly joined Serie A last year when Atalanta showed interest.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, O’Riley impresses with his game intelligence and timing—two qualities Tudor highly values for Juventus’ midfield.

His transfer fee is estimated between €25 and €30 million, significantly lower than Hjulmand’s price tag. Juventus aims to negotiate a loan deal, possibly with an option to buy.

This approach would allow the club to strengthen the squad without committing too much financially upfront.

Brighton acquired O’Riley from Celtic just last summer for €29.5 million, so their willingness to let him go remains uncertain. Still, Juventus’ strategy to pursue O’Riley shows their pragmatic approach amid a competitive transfer market.
