Nico Gonzalez’s transfer from Juventus to Atletico Madrid has sparked much discussion about the terms of his deal and what it means financially for both clubs.

According to Il Bianconero, the Argentine midfielder joined Atletico on a loan deal that includes a right to buy. And which could become an obligation if specific conditions are met. This article breaks down those details and what Juventus stands to gain.

Gonzalez’s time at Juventus was brief and challenging. Signed in the summer of 2024 for a total fee of €30 million plus bonuses from Fiorentina, he struggled to make a significant impact during his only season at the club.

As a result, Juventus agreed to loan him out to Atletico Madrid, moving him from Serie A to La Liga on a deal that includes a costly loan fee and an option to purchase.

Conditions for the mandatory buyout and Juventus’ earnings

The key factor that will determine whether Atletico Madrid must buy Gonzalez outright depends on his playing time. Specifically, the buyout clause is triggered if he features in at least 60% of Atletico’s league matches.

This means Gonzalez needs to play in at least 21 games, and in each match, he must stay on the pitch for a minimum of 45 minutes. If these conditions are met by June 30, 2026, Atletico will be compelled to sign him permanently.

The loan deal already brought Juventus €1 million, with the potential for an additional €1 million based on performance objectives. Should Atletico exercise the obligation to buy, Juventus will earn a further €32 million. And making the total transfer value around €33 to €34 million.

Since joining Atletico on the last day of the transfer window, Gonzalez has made a promising start. After the international break in September, he appeared in three La Liga matches: 76 minutes against Villarreal, 77 minutes versus Mallorca, and 34 minutes in the game against Rayo Vallecano.

This move marks a fresh chapter for Gonzalez, who will aim to secure a permanent spot in Atletico’s lineup and prove his value. For Juventus, the transfer represents a strategic financial recovery after a difficult season, as highlighted by Il Bianconero.
