Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on his YouTube channel, provided an in-depth update on the future of Nico Gonzalez, whose situation at Atlético Madrid could have direct consequences for Juventus at the end of the season.
Lookman’s Arrival Changes the Picture
Nico Gonzalez, currently on loan at Atlético Madrid but still owned by Juventus, sees his future closely intertwined with that of Ademola Lookman.

According to Moretto, the two players’ paths in Madrid are connected not only for financial reasons but also for technical considerations. Lookman has made a devastating impact in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, including a crucial goal against FC Barcelona.
His performances in an Atlético shirt have been outstanding, winning over both the club and its supporters. As a result, Nico’s playing time is expected to decrease.
While Diego Simeone — known as “El Cholo” — has always held Gonzalez in high regard and shares a strong rapport with the Argentine, the increased competition following Lookman’s arrival inevitably limits his role.
Before his recent injury, Nico had delivered solid performances and was consistently considered an important part of Simeone’s plans. However, the squad dynamics have now shifted.
Redemption Clause in Doubt
The structure of the deal adds another layer of uncertainty. Nico joined Atlético on a paid loan worth around €1 million, with a €32 million purchase option that becomes mandatory if he reaches 60% of the team’s seasonal appearances.
To count as an official appearance, a player must feature for at least 45 minutes. At present, Gonzalez has yet to come close to that threshold. This raises doubts about whether Atlético will be obliged to activate the buy clause.

Internally, there are growing question marks over whether his stay in Madrid will continue under the current terms. One possible scenario is that the two clubs could reopen negotiations at the end of the season to revise the transfer fee. However, that remains a separate discussion for the future.
For now, what is clear is that Lookman’s explosive impact has reshaped Atlético’s attacking hierarchy — and Nico Gonzalez’s long-term future in Madrid is no longer as certain as it once seemed.
