Scout, coach, and mentor Nuno Guedes has been all of this and more for Alberto Costa. The young Portuguese full-back, a winter signing by Cristiano Giuntoli, was brought in permanently from Vitória Guimarães for over 13 million euros.

Initially, Costa remained under the radar, but he has recently started to make an impression. He featured in the last half-hour of Juventus’ match against Verona, following a brief appearance during the disappointing Coppa Italia night against Empoli.

Watching from afar and cheering him on was none other than his former coach, Nuno Guedes, who nurtured his talent at Tirsense, the club from his hometown.

Speaking in an interview with Tuttosport, Guedes described Costa as “a player with great speed, endurance, and technique, capable of covering the entire right flank with intensity. He defends well and contributes effectively to the attack.”

Insights from Alberto Costa’s first coach

We had the chance to interview him to hear his thoughts on Costa’s progress.

“I watched the match against Verona, hoping to see Alberto play,” he said. “Fortunately, he got the chance to step onto the pitch for a few minutes. I think he started well, had a good opportunity early on, and that probably helped him relax. He didn’t look nervous or anxious. He integrated well into the game and contributed significantly to the attacking plays. I liked what I saw, and I believe he showed he can be an important player.”

Have you spoken to him recently?

“I haven’t spoken to him, but I believe he has already adapted to both the club and the city. Thiago Motta is a smart and experienced coach who understands where Alberto comes from and has given him the time needed to settle in.

It’s not easy for a player arriving from a club like Vitória to immediately step into a team like Juventus. The league is different, the playing style is different, and of course, the expectations are much higher. At Juventus, winning is a must, and there’s little room for mistakes, which adds pressure on the players.

But Alberto is an incredibly hard worker, highly focused and determined. He has fully adjusted now and will keep showing what he’s capable of.”

What does his family think about his move to Italy?

“His family is already with him, which is a big help. It gives him even more stability.”

What do you think his ambitions are for the near future?

“Right now, his main goal is simply to play as much as possible and make the most of this opportunity. As I said, he’s extremely determined and will do everything he can to prove that signing him was a great decision for Juventus.

Alberto is an exceptional young man, and I have no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him.”
